Re: “Letters

A few comments about Mr. Genesic's sarcastic letter.

The prohibition of pot has been a scam from the beginning and is a disgrace that should have never occurred. Prohibition was scandalous because of the pandering to extreme racism and corrupt monopolistic business interests and manipulative and outright acts of deceit.

Mr. Genesic can be ignorant of the fact that pot has been used as medicine for over 4,000 years by nearly every major culture. He can also be ignorant of the fact that cannabis was used as medicine in the USA until the scandalous prohibition of 1937. Cannabis was listed in the US Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942 under that name and not marijuana. Back then the AMA was also opposed to the prohibition. There was no scientific evidence ever presented at the congressional hearings that pot is harmful. Just twisted, inaccurate and highly dubious anecdotal evidence. Anslinger freely represented anecdotes about users of "loco weed" aka Jimson weed as being actions of people under the influence of marijuana. Many of the reps thought they were outlawing Jimson weed use.

The term "marijuana" was used to mislead people. Back them it was commonly know as hemp or cannabis, muggles or reefer. The only people who used the term marijuana were those along the far south west border with Mexico. The term marijuana was used to pander to anti-Mexican sentiments. There were also a lot racial slurs directed at blacks, asians & middle easterners.

Did you know the decorticator machine received 2 US patents in 1936. The decorticator was a machine that processed hemp for the fiber efficiently and cheaply. Prior to that processing hemp was an expensive, labor intensive(done by hand), time consuming process. This development would put hemp back in the running against cotton and synthetic fibers. Popular Mechanics did a spread about hemps potential as the nations first billion dollar crop.

Andrew Mellon, the Secretary of the Treasury who created the Narcotics Bureau had major investments in DuPont chemicals and he wanted to help insure DuPonts success with synthetic fibers and viewed hemp fiber as a challenge to that. He practiced blatant nepotism when he appointed his nephew in law Harry Anlsinger as head of the new Narcotics Bureau. Anslinger was an extreme racist & unemployed alcohol prohibitionist who became a hero to his fellow unemployed prohibitionists when he brought them on board. There is also the Hearsts and Rockafellers. Both financed the prohibition campaign to bolster their monopolistic business interests and both were extremely racist. Hemp is a much better resource for paper pulp and hemp fuels are much more bio-friendly, economical and renewable than fossil fuels. In the late 30's Henry ford had developed a car made mostly out of hemp plastics & fibers and designed to run on hemp fuel.

If Anslinger and his consorts tried to do today what they did back then they would charged with a wide variety of hate crimes and corrupt business practices.

It is also of major importance to note that virtually all of our founding fathers (Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Monroe, Madison, Jackson, Pierce, Taylor & Lincoln) used cannabis.
