Mr. Howell, Please take a look at what responsible historians have been saying since the 1960's about, "Saved the lives of "untold" American and Japanese lives? Correct because the told amounts are way out of wack. Read Gar Alperowitz's "The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb" to discover that even US Army Airforce General Hap Arnold believed the bomb didn't need to be dropped, that Japan was already defeated and would surrender without US invasion and that Japan had been exploring surrender terms with US for months before August 6. Truman insisted on "unconditional surrender" and all the Japanese were asking was to keep their Emperor who was the symbol of the Nation. And please note that even though Truman insisted on that could not be, MacArthur actually permitted the retention of the Emperor under his military occupation knowing it was necessary to obtain
Japanese civilian compliance with occupation rule. The fact is that Truman would have saved UNTOLD lives if he had just accepted Japan surrender back in the Spring, not just at Hiroshima and Nagasaki but in the large numbers of Japanese cities that were obliterated with firebombs with 20 to 90 percent destruction and the military lives on both sides lost in the intervening months. Japan did not want to surrender to the Soviet Union and it was probably when their troops were committed to the war against Japan that they surrendered far more than the two A-bombs.
The narrative continues-- The US Navy is a "Force for Good". The Army was the necessary condition to creating "FREEDOM" i.e. the USA and its constitution that recognized slavery--human beings as "property rights" of other human beings. So long as city council/CSU operate under this narrative and the Republican Party leadership here and in Congress continue to foster a corresponding myth that Climate change as a hoax responsible humans are hog-tied in attempting to really deal with the harms of military spending. But at least Solar City is doing what it can to address the energy problem as best it can in the toxic mental environment and general stupidity of the citizenry.
The posted article from The Australian is, according to FAIR, loaded with misinformation and lies. Just the phrase, "generous subsidies" is intentionally misleading. The Oil and Gas industry receives far greater subsidies than renewable ever have and continue to receive despite their record profits and environmental mayhem. Germany achieved 50% of total usage via solar one day this July. They have been acting responsibly with regard to their commitments to the Kyoto Treaty. Their plan is to be 100% renewable by 2050. --and their economy seems to be one of the strongest in the EU and perhaps the world. It is long past time for the rest of the world's citizens to act as responsibly before we lose a planet capable of sustaining prosperous and happy biological life.
To the comment that global warming is a natural event I would first argue that well over 95% of climatologists (scientists with credentials in the field) agree that the warming we are experiencing is in great part a result of human activity and not cyclical solar/earth relationships. Second, even if it were a "natural" event, the consequences remain the same. We must prepare to act in ways that defend the global population's safety that is threatened by the change. Please note the Department of Defense contains studies that affirm my point. (Also note the choice of the AF Acadamy to utilize solar power) Global Warming is the greatest threat to national security. If we want to drive the defense budget by fear of threats then lets at least get the real threats clear and design a defense strategy capable of addressing those threats.
