It will almost always be more efficient and overall better bang for your buck to have the fire dept provide your transport. You have to have the fire department to do a multitude of things, and having a private ambulance company just causes duplication of costs, and usually the fire department is subsidizing the ambulance through staffing, man power, supplies, or equipment.
