What you don't see is the voluminous e-mail traffic going on behind the scenes. The quiet requests to have things changed simply do not work. They never have (but they have always come first). All branches of the military are perfectly confident ignoring any amicable requests for respectful dialogue when it comes to these issues. There are rare occasions where one or two minor actors might be genuine in their support of actions to remediate such failures, but on those rare occasions the person(s) involved tend to lack final authority. Spreading messages of hate towards gays as an integral part of ones faith is a problem, especially when it is done from the bully pulpit of military authority. The ONLY way to fix it is to publicly shame the institution responsible until they are forced to change their ways or face legal action.
After years of redundant incidents like this it is no real surprise that the leadership at USAFA would do such a thing. Just a few days ago I met with a group of cadets that are members of USAFA Freethinkers. They shared with me personal stories of the chain of command marginalizing them for their beliefs and denying them equal treatment time and time again simply because they do not profess an approved religious belief. It seems that the leaders of this once fine institution are immune to the powers of reason and genuine love for our fellow human beings. How sad.
