MAN’S BEST FRIEND IS WHO YOU KILL WHEN YOU SHOOT A DOG
Do you understand this? It is no different for non-law enforcement folks when they lose their dogs to tragedies such as needless cop on dog shootings.
For Jonathan Palmer, photographing the funeral of a fallen police officer was just another day at the office. That is, until the touching image he captured, of K-9 dog Figo mourning his slain master, went viral, prompting thousands of responses and calls from national media outlets like MSN, Buzzfeed and the Huffington Post.
MAN’S BEST FRIEND
The 1870 Dog Shooting Case of Burden v Hornsby in Warrensburg, Missouri is the origin of the timeless phrase “A MAN'S BEST FRIEND IS HIS DOG.” Senator George Graham Vest won the Missouri Supreme Court battle for his client, Charles Burden with his speech titled “Eulogy to the Dog.” Senator Vest’s words about man’s friend were true in 1870 and hold true to this day, over One Hundred Forty years later.
SENATOR VEST’S EULOGY TO THE DOG:
"Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us -- those whom we trust with our happiness and good name -- may become traitors in their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world -- the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous -- is his dog.
"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.
"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

SPEND SOME TIME REFLECTING UPON THE LAW ENFORCEMENT OATH OF HONOR
On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. ALL cop on dog shootings are very upsetting to me. When a war veteran’s dog is shot, however, it takes on a little different meaning to this military mom. I don't take offenses against America's Veterans of Foreign Wars lightly. In MY OPINION, ANYONE OFFENDING AN AMERICAN VFW or his/her family IS SCUM OF THE EARTH, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!! I can't express how serious I am when I say that I am ashamed to say that Colorado law enforcement officers have shot 2 dogs belonging to American VFWs in the last 3 months.

August 2011 Best Friend of Navy Seal Lays Next to His Coffin
This August 2011, heart-wrenching photo of Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson’s best friend, Hawkeye, laying next to his casket, bears witness to these 1870 words of Missouri Senator Vest: “And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."
Hawkeye grieving the loss of Tumilson: “you see that these dogs are thinking and feeling creatures, and that sets the stage for grief," she said. http://health.usnews.com/health-news/news/articles/2012/07/06/dogs-may-mourn-as-deeply-as-humans-do

COP ON DOG SHOOTINGS: According to the ASPCA's Summer 2013 Position Statement:
"...Our review of public records of firearms discharges by police indicates that it is common for 50% or more of all shooting incidents to involve an officer shooting a dog. Many of these incidents involve multiple shots fired and many do not result in the dog’s swift, humane death..."
August 2013 Edition of THE POLICE CHIEF Magazine includes article titled: “Officer Safety Corner: Dogs and the Police Response: A Guide for Safe, Successful, and Humane Encounters” (links to additional law enforcement publications regarding cop on dog shootings are at the end of this post). The last paragraph of this article is:
“Given the growing amount of media attention, the increasingly obvious public interest in animal welfare issues, and because it is the right thing to do, this subject calls for significant attention and training…”
