Ask Austin Brown who Parquet Courts listened to when putting together its taut, twitchy punk rock, and he gives a nonchalant response. "It's all the usual suspects, all the great records that everyone seems to like," says the guitarist.…

The Florida alt-rockers figure out what matters most
            by Chris Parker
When you start out rattling the basement walls with your friends, there are no expectations beyond a gig, beer, and maybe some girls. But if you're good, that can change quickly, and it's a challenge not to lose your head in the whiplash.…

As the sun set on Saturday, the fifth day of the Black Forest Fire, a tragic time became a joyous occasion in front of Pine Creek High School. People lined the intersection with American flags, signs, banners and noisemakers to show their gratitude to the first responders, something that many firefighters had never seen before.…

The military, and more specifically the U.S. Northern Command public-affairs office, is taking video from a variety of mostly first-person viewpoints and releasing them copyright-free to the public. They're very, very cool, with viewpoints shot from the Chinook helicopters dropping water from their Bambi Buckets; USAFA firefighters cutting lines, and a variety of other efforts.…

Filling sausage casings is harder than it looks, and if you watch some dumb Indy journo who nearly ruined the first batch ever made in Ivywild School do it, it looks impossible. Luckily, better hands are at work.…

        Craft beer
            by Bryce Crawford
Laughing Lab Scottish Ale has won more medals at the Great American Beer Festival than any other Colorado beer. But when the inspiration for the name passed away in 2010 — Camden, a 16-year-old yellow Labrador retriever — it wasn't all the acquired hardware that drew dozens to the couple's neighborhood brewery in support.…

        Baked goods
            by Matthew Schniper
Alicia Prescott has given me a chef's coat and rolling pin and set me to work over a flour-dusted cutting board, pressing a mound of pastry dough that's been patiently resting for two days in a fridge. Inside a restaurant menu-like trifold, which creates "little layers of goodness" that keep the dough from drying out, the Blue Star's executive pastry chef has already spread cinnamon-sugar.…

A tip for local hip-hop fans: If you’re going up to the big city this Saturday, here’s your chance for a cameo in the ReMINDers’ next video.

Colorado Springs’ favorite hip-hop duo — as chosen by last year’s Indy Music Awards voters — will be shooting a clip for “If You Didn’t Know” in Denver beginning at 10 a.m.

The street performance will be filmed on the Barnes and Noble block of the 16th Street outdoor mall.…

The decline of the record industry may or may not be real, but the death of the compact disc is definitely being exaggerated. How else to explain the avalanche of shiny plastic discs being released here in town?

At the Black Sheep tonight, instrumental band Autumn Creatures will share the stage with Knight in Colors and Mobdividual, all of whom are celebrating brand new CDs.…

With an assist from Apple, the New Zealander's 'Yeah Yeah' rockets to success
            by Chris Parker
There's a fine line between homage and expropriation, and Willy Moon is fast erasing it. The 24-year-old New Zealand native first garnered attention with "Yeah Yeah," which went viral last fall after its placement in an iPod Touch ad.…

Flansburgh and Linnell move the mainstream in their own direction
            by Alan Sculley
Precious few bands survive nearly as long as They Might Be Giants. What's even more amazing is that John Flansburgh and John Linnell — whose recently released Nanobots is the 16th album of a more than 30-year creative partnership — still sound as fresh and creative as ever.…

Although she'd been singing since childhood and writing songs since her tweens, it wasn't until Gina Sicilia saw Susan Tedeschi open up for B.B. King that she discovered her own destiny. "I remember leaving the show and I told my mom, 'This is what I want to do, exactly what she's doing,'" says Sicilia of her Tedeschi-inspired epiphany.…

The post-punk throwbacks search for something archaic and pure
            by Tom Lanham
Yannis Philippakis was just 5 when he and his mother moved from the Greek island of Karpathos to England. Still, the Foals front man often returns there to find peace of mind — or, as he did most recently, to compose music; in this case, for his band's third studio album, Holy Fire.…

American Kenny Rackers proved he’s crackers as he beat other daredevils who hurled themselves down a hill in the name of English tradition.

Of all things flammable in the wide world, tap water shouldn't be one of them. At least that's the consensus — call it crazy — among environmentalists and fracking foes, for whom the phenomena, supposedly brought on by nearby hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas extraction, has grown into quite a powerful symbol.…

The folk-punk-hippie troubadour gets by with a little help from his drugs
            by Chris Parker
In some ways, closing night MeadowGrass festival headliner Todd Snider is the living embodiment of Richard Linklater's film, Slacker. While a football player at his Beaverton, Ore., high school, Snider literally turned on, tuned in, and dropped out after sampling some psychedelic mushrooms.…

The MeadowGrass fest artist on the future of Hadestown and the virtues of the past
            by Loring Wirbel
In less than 10 years, Anais Mitchell has launched a traditional folk-music career, diverted to an operatic retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, and released a heartfelt album-long ode to her father. This weekend, she appears at MeadowGrass with former Colorado resident Jefferson Hamer, promoting Child Ballads, a new album devoted to the work of a 19th-century curator of traditional folk tunes.…
