In 1956 as a junior in high school, a college combo at Oklahoma State headed by Ashley Alexander, jr. asked if I would like to try out for his band as guitarist. Somehow I made the cut and mostly played rhythm guitar as Ashley played bone, sax, trumpet and a little bit of everything else that made a sound.

The first time I heard Johnny Smith, in the early 60s, it was in an LP released in Argentina entitled "Los Grandes" (The Greats) which included only one track by Johnny and also beautiful pieces by Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams, Lambert, Hendricks and Rose, Count Basie, etc.
But Smith's rendition of Benny Golson's ballad "I'll Remember Clifford" was the track I loved most for many years. I was a teenager then and hadn't heard of Clifford Brown yet.

To hear and watch you play in that intimate setting was inspiring; the understated subtlety was captivating if not mesmerizing.
