Richy and his buddies at the Indy are so used to automaticly trashing on the city government without doing any research they forgot how to act like journalists. But that's ok, its not like this is a REAL newspaper so we don't expect much out of them.

Not to get into a mash-up with commentator "mozicodo," I am a Colorado native who now lives in California, where swiftwater and flood rescue are taken seriously. California has one of the most proactive, local, regional, and statewide swiftwater rescue capabilities nationwide.

In addition to the intelligent comments above (unlike the original article), the article's author (whom I hesitate to label a "journalist" for fear of insulting that profession) might wish to consider that tourists visit Colorado Springs--and presumably Colorado Springs would like to welcome their business. Not everyone lives in areas with thunderstorms, flash floods, and other forms of severe weather.

The fact that Colorado Springs has one of the best water rescue teams in the country should be an indication of the NEED for these services and the NEED for these services is a direct indication to the number of calls for service they have.

Because swiftwater is hazardous to both the citizens and the rescuers, it appears that the city is taking a pro-active approach to educate their citizens in an effort to prevent the number of calls, and reduce the potential of death to both citizens and rescuers.

While the information in the press release may seem obvious to journalist, it isn't quite so obvious to the citizens based on the number of calls for service that the Colorado Springs Fire Department has responded to over the years.

I think the city is doing a great job providing this information - I'll thumb my nose at the journalist for taking this so lightly. Once I was going to take a raft trip in the Royal Gorge and although it was not storming where we were, the river guides wouldn't let us go because of the danger from up stream.

While I appreciate the attempt by this author to write a clever article, flooding remains the leading cause of weather-related death nationwide, killing several hundred people annually.

Children are at tremendous risk when there is flash flooding, in part because fast flowing floodwater is so mesmerizing.
