Put me down as 100% supportive of Lathen's stand.
So the unemployed haven't got a nickel to spend on gas to get to a job interview.

      Mr. Miss, or Ms Siggie:

Please, I spent my entire twenty dollar county gas voucher on two dime bags so I could stand in line with great patience to cash my welfare check in order to pay my tuition to finish my Phd in “Monoidal T-Norm Based Logic” – basically the field that covers prelinear commutative bounded integral residuated lattices. A particularly relevant branch of ‘fuzzy math’ that allows one to design a mathematical subset that describes a politician, who never really had a real job – gets elected to public office to set complex fiscal policy for a region in serious economic decline then works to disallow an individual a chance to find work.

The point attempted to be made, and obviously not very well – is that in my most humble opinion, it would make more sense to provide a $20.00 gas voucher out of ‘taxpayer dollars’ to an unemployed individual so that he, she, or it might find a job and then start the process whereby he, she, or it might get off the public assistance role, food stamps, and begin work earning a taxable income – and thereby contribute toward the betterment of society by paying for some of the cost associated with running the government Mrs. Lathen appears to despise although, I have yet to see her refuse to accept her paycheck from her 'work' as a government employee.

Taking the logic that Mrs. Lathen espouses to it’s outer edge, it might lead us less toward a total state of ‘socialism’ desired by this nasty fascist President (as Lathen describes him) if we just ended all public assistance and let folks in need just friggin starve to death.

Which is doubly ironic in that these same fat cats have money in their pockets right now only because these same workers bailed them out via the taxes that were collected from them before they were thrown out of work.
Since Ms. Lathen enjoys calling the president a Marxist and a socialist, is it okay to call her a fascist and a falangist?

An alternate view to Mrs. Lathen's $20.00 'redistribution of wealth'

If those 32,000 unemployed in the county were actually working - at what is close to the average individual median wage for the area - and that at that wage level, the average propensity to consume is 92% - and 85% of that goes for non-taxable spending as mortgages, food and health care - -

the remainder of those dollars spent would generate just over $8,000,000.00 at the 7.4% retail tax level - - of which most goes to the state, 2.5 goes to the city.

It is fortunate that we are paying Mrs. Lathen $87,000.00 a year to ensure we are not wasting $20.00 to those looking for work so they too can contribute to the kitty that pays her salary.
