We all know that guy. You know the one: that charmer; that con; that smarmy prick strolling through life, dodging all its woes while enjoying accolades from peers and avoiding the consequences of his actions. You're in his social circle, and for some reason you can't get out. Maybe you're hanging around just to see him exposed.
Well, 6 for 12 Productions is with you as it stages its delightfully raunchy dance/theater comedy Trials and Tribulations of an A-hole.
Ila Conoley Paladino, 36, choreographer and co-producer, explains by phone how a small annoyance evolved into this hour-and-a-half production.
"I was in Louisville, Kentucky, when I started thinking about this guy who I'm sure we all know. You know, that a-hole we all just hate," says Paladino. "He's charming, but we hate it, and we keep asking ourselves, 'Why do people keep doing nice things for him?' Then we find ourselves doing nice things for him."
So she came back and introduced the idea to the cast and crew, "and it just kind of took off from there. All of the cast members added their own ideas about what they think this a-hole would be like." Thus, the R-rated Trials was born.
Paladino is one of co-founders of 6 for 12 (which references productions with a theme of six — here, six performances — and a flat ticket rate of $12), now in its fifth year in the Springs. The company includes performance actors from most of the major colleges and universities in the area. In this production, they'll use song and dance to bring to life one of the luckiest, most charming, misogynistic, self-aggrandizing jerks you've ever met, and they'll give you a chance to practice analytical proctology by picking him apart.
But will he get his comeuppance? Paladino doesn't ensure it: "You'll just have to come watch the show."
