A local take on area music

Street Smarts

The Spring's music scene takes a backseat to Denver's, but just like everything else in life: It depends on how you interact with it to enjoy the best of what's there.

Who is your favorite local musician or group? A fantastic drummer named Randy Bowen. He plays all kinds of music and he's a great guy. I watch him play whenever I can.

What are the best local music venues? I like playing at the Ancient Mariner, and The Black Sheep is also good because I get to link up with acts that are touring. The Flux Capacitor is a really cool venue because it draws an audience that really cares about art.

Relate your most recent live music experience. I saw Rubedo at Flux Capacitor.

What's the best local live show you've attended? That would be STRFKR, a band out of Portland, at The Black Sheep. They came out at the end in astronaut suits and crowd-surfed on the audience.

What's your best-ever concert? Run the Jewels, a hip-hop band, at the Ogden in Denver.

Your favorite Prince song? "Breakfast Can Wait."

Do you have a favorite local band? The Haunted Windchimes. I went to high school with Desirae Garcia, one of the band members.

What's the best local musical venue? House shows. People open up their homes for small, cozy concerts. Otherwise, I like Ivywild.

Describe your most recent live music experience. My husband and I saw a two-guy band called Beta Radio at a local house show.

What's your best-ever concert? Mumford and Sons at the Salida Stopover music festival last summer.

Your favorite Prince song? "Purple Rain." It's the song I think of when I think of Prince.

Who is your favorite area band? The Lumineers, a Denver group.

What's the best area music venue? Red Rocks, hands down.

Describe your most recent live music experience. I went to see Trapt at The Black Sheep, but they were totally upstaged by the opening group, Endless Line, who totally destroyed the place.

What's your best-ever area live show? Linkin Park and Incubus at Comfort Dental [now Fiddler's Green] in Denver.

What's your all-time best concert? I'm not usually into country, but the best live performance I've seen was Garth Brooks. He put on an awesome show.

Your favorite Prince song? "Purple Rain."
