  • Manitou Art Theater presents puppetry, music and stories from the ancient Islamic World

In a time when Afghanistan has come to be synonymous with the face of Osama bin Laden, terror and an almost medieval poverty, it's important not to forget the treasures of humanity that every culture -- no matter how different -- has to offer.

And who better to share these treasures with than the kids?

That's exactly what the Manitou Art Theater will be doing this Saturday as they present Wonder Tales of the Islamic World, a family-oriented production that features shadow puppetry, traditional costumes and live music from Afghanistan, Arabia and Turkey.

Betsy Tobin, a master puppeteer and founder of the Now or Never Theatre based in Boulder, will introduce the audience to Mullah Nasruddin, a mythical trickster and your guide to the afternoon's adventures where you'll meet nervy dervishes, ornery camels, warrior women, exotic monsters and plenty o' sorcerers and arrogant heroes. All the elements of a great story!

Not only will you be visually delighted with ancient illuminated manuscript backgrounds and shadow screens, but you'll get plenty of aural atmospherics from Wahid Omar's Sitar, Harmonium, Kalimba and Tabla.

Don't miss this opportunity to travel the world here at home and continue to support one of the only theaters in Colorado Springs consistently bringing original productions to the stage.
