Grand Old Man

J. Donald Haney

Springs native Don Haney has seen Colorado Springs grow from a quiet town of 30,000 to a metropolitan area of half-a-million-plus. He still lives in the modest house on Tejon Street where he and his late wife, Gratia Belle, raised a passel of kids in the '40s and '50s. A lawyer of legendary probity, Don wasn't afraid to fight bullies, however powerful. Inspired by his example, his kids grew up to make their own contributions; son John, for example, has worked to revive the downtown trolley for two decades. Don would, no doubt, be surprised and even mildly dismayed to be honored as our city's Grand Old Man; he'd probably say that he'd hadn't done anything other than try to live his life in a decent and honorable way. Exactly. (JH)
