Who is the Takedown Hammer?
Is it a third-party team of Canadians?
Is it an old buddy of Craig Brittain?
Is it Eric Chanson?
Who the hell is Eric Chanson?
Is it the attorney, David Blade III?
Is David Blade III really an attorney?
Does David Blade III even exist?
It's all a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, surrounded by the enigmatic, confusing and conflicting statements made by Brittain, the 28-year-old revenge-porn purveyor and owner of the site Is Anybody Down?.
Since we reported on Brittain last month, a number of media outlets have picked up on the story. In Denver, CBS4 interviewed Brittain for about 50 minutes. Some of that footage made it into its two-part series on Is Anybody Down? (which the station chose not to name), but all of the footage has made it online. (You can watch the full interview in two parts here and here.)
The thing that jumped out to me during the interview was Brittain's explanation of the Takedown Hammer. That's the supposedly third-party service that will negotiate to have your photos removed from the site — for a $250 fee.
In Part 1 of CBS4's interview (below) at around 19 minutes in, Brittain explains that this takedown service is provided by a "team" who come from the Canadian firm DMCA.com. He further states that he has no idea if there is a David Blade III working for this third-party outfit, if they have a lawyer working on their staff, and so on.
This is directly in contradiction with what we reported, which was based on our interviews with Brittain. This wouldn't be the first time that the Takedown Hammer/David Blade story has changed, however; Adam Steinbaugh has a good rundown of the vagaries found in this saga.
What Brittain told us was that he knew the person running the third-party service.
"It's one of my buddies," he said. And David Blade? "They invented this lawyer ..."
Brittain balked at seeing this quote in print, claiming that he never said it. But he did.
Here we are discussing David Blade on the patio of Good Company Bar and Restaurant. (Background noise and Rose Royce make it a little difficult to hear.)
