Style of music, in 10 words or less: "A bit of groove, a bit of math, a lot of fun. (Yeah, that's more than 10, sorry.)"

Three artists he owes everything to: Frank Zappa, Beethoven and Ornette Coleman

Debut performance: 2008

Recordings: CM3 EP (2011), Live at Front Range BBQ (2012), The Very Best Reason to Reason (2014), Only Shy Deer King (with Hydrogen Skyline, 2014), 8.1 Bit (as St. Bernard with Animus Invidious, 2014)

Why he matters: When it comes to collaborations, bassist and composer Charlie Milo has racked up more than anyone else in town — possibly in the whole state — working with his "co-conspirators, repeat offenders, collaborators, and the strong community which I'm proud to be part of." Team-ups over the past year include Flodignatic (an avant-rap collective that includes Stoney Bertz, DJ Gravity, Big Ro, EGOed, Earsiq Radkeys and Animus Invidious), contributions to the new Hydrogen Skyline album, and various mutations of his Charlie Milo Trio. He also composed his first "serious" work, "Coach," which was written for string quartet and dedicated to his father. And he debuted a deejay alter-ego, St. Bernard, with one mash-up mixtape under his belt and a full-length collaboration with Animus on the way.

2nd place: Arch Hooks and Mike Clark & the Sugar Sounds (TIE)
