click to enlarge Clerks II - - Directed by Kevin Smith - The Weinstein Company - - - Even as a Kevin Smith fan, I had to admit that recent - films, while still completely entertaining, suffered from a - decline in the quality of comedy. What started out as - hilarious observational dialogue about the life of a - slacker had sadly transformed into nothing more than a - series of fart and bong jokes. While he did try for a more - mature route with the much-maligned Jersey Girl - , it was becoming harder and harder to really rely - on him for any groundbreaking work. And then, Smith - turns around and delivers Clerks II, his first fully - realized film since Chasing Amy that does a - great job of balancing the pathos of maturity of that film - with the well-worn stoner humor his latest fan base has - grown accustomed to. It's great to see Dante and Randal - again, and it's even better to send them off in the - manner they deserve. Louis Fowler -

click to enlarge Slayer - - Directed by Kevin VanHook - Anchor Bay Entertainment - - - Predator meets From Dusk Till Dawn in - Slayer, a supremely silly but incredibly fun little - jaunt that stars the perpetually square-jawed Casper Van - Dien as an "elite commando leader" moving a group of - soldiers through the South American jungle as a tribe of - pre-Incan vampires hunt them down one by one. The - vampires, it seems, are attacking humans because of - man's encroachment on their jungle domain. Slayer is a - cheap blast that I'll recommend to any horror fan craving - some cheap thrills. Louis Fowler -

click to enlarge Macumba Sexual - - - Directed by Jess Franco - Severin Films - - Jess Franco is best described as either a cinematic - charlatan or a moviemaking madman that deserves to be - hoisted next to Fellini. Of course, the Spanish filmmaker - has never received any of the accolades that Fellini has, - but the comparison is valid: Like Fellini's, Franco's films - are somewhat incomprehensible tales filled with blatant - sexual imagery mingled with a severe penchant for erotic - surrealism. His films are often very dreamlike, almost as - if they were filmed in an alternate universe and somehow - ended up in our dimension. His 1983 film Macumba - Sexual is a perfect example of this otherworldliness. - A sexually-frustrated real estate agent becomes - bewitched by a gender-ambiguous princess who lives on - a hallucinatory island with Freudian symbology all - around. A true fever dream captured on celluloid. - Louis Fowler
