It's been explored repeatedly, - but Jonestown, the award-winning PBS - documentary that explores every facet of the tragedy, is - a completely compelling look at the history of the cult - and con-man Jones. It also provides insight into how - someone becomes obsessively devoted to a cult, even at - the loss of their own and their loved ones' lives. Filled - with unseen and actually shocking footage, this doc is - the definitive word on this real-life horror story. - Louis Fowler

click to enlarge Shadow Warriors: The Complete - First Season (NR) - - - Ronin Entertainment / BCI Eclipse - - - If a film's got Sonny Chiba in it, it can't be all that bad. - The biggest badass to ever appear on film in Japan, he's - best known for his hardcore action-filled Street - Fighter films. Finally, his legendary television series - Shadow Warriors gets a proper release via Ronin - Entertainment. Chiba stars as Hattori Hanzo (the same - character he played in Kill Bill), the greatest - swordsman in Japan who, along with his Shadow - Warriors, are forced into exile when a new shogun takes - reign with an army of evil ninjas. It's up to Hanzo and - his band of warriors to restore peace to the land - all through the use of brutally awesome, highly - stylized swordplay. Why can't American shows be like - this? A must-own for Chiba fans. Louis - Fowler - Shanghai Surprise (PG-13) -

    Shanghai Surprise (PG-13)

click to enlarge - Lionsgate - - There are a lot of '80s films that should be on DVD and - aren't. Yet, pure, unadulterated crap, like this 1986 - Madonna/Sean Penn stinker, gets released with a - special edition, no less! Shanghai Surprise was a - punch line for years about everything that's wrong with - movies. Somehow, over time, it has apparently gained its - apologists. But there's no way to apologize for a film in - which this gruesome twosome takes on thugs and drug - dealers in 1930s Shanghai! It's a screwball romantic - adventure that's just plain screwed. What's really - worrisome, though, is this thought: Who, exactly, was - clamoring for this to be released? Where is the fan base - that took up a petition to get this out there? Where, I - ask?!?!
