The latter - follows the buddy-cop formula to a T, right down to the - exaggerated final showdown, as a strapped cadre of - uninitiated officers infiltrates and takes down the big - boss, all the while flying through the air, firing two guns - at once, like the British John Woo tribute that it is. The - DVD is immense fun, including a TV-friendly swear- - track, deleted scenes, trivia and a press tour feature. At - one point, the DVD quotes the box for Bad Boys II, agreeing that it is most definitely a "no-holds- - barred, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride." The same might as - well be said for Hot Fuzz. click to enlarge Flash Gordon: Saviour of the - Universe Edition (PG) - - - Universal Home Entertainment - - Ah, the 1980 adaptation of the classic sci-fi character - Flash Gordon. Many purists hate it for its immense - cheese value, but the fact remains: This is one of the - most fun films ever made. The hollow Sam Jones is - Gordon, who must take on the evil (and drag queen-ish) - Ming the Merciless, played with Joan Crawford-like - panache by Max von Sydow. Garish costumes, - glimmering set design and hilarious dialogue create a - comic-book spectacle that comes to life but never takes - itself seriously. This edition has interviews with comic- - book artist Alex Ross, on how the film inspired him, and - with screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., who shrugs the - whole thing off. There's also an episode of the 1936 - serial that's every bit as good as the film it's - accompanying. Best of all, Queen provides the - transcendent soundtrack. Louis Fowler

click to enlarge Beauty Queen Butcher (NR) - - - Camp Motion Pictures - - As part of Camp's Retro '80s Horror Collection, the - company brings us another lost, shot-on-video classic in - the largely unknown slasher parody Beauty School - Butcher. Much like the title character in Carrie, overweight orphan teenager Phyllis is elected, as a - joke, by the school's resident clique of rich popular girls - to participate in a beauty pageant. She loses, and to - make matters worse, the girls stick her only friend, her - kitten, into a microwave. This sends Phyllis over the - edge, and she subsequently dispatches each of the - snobby girls in a very beauty-obsessed way. It's a - commendable effort, and the fact that it's directed by a - woman, Jill Zurborg, adds a slightly feminist twist. But at - two hours, it's really pushing the limits; a slight edit of - about 40 or 50 minutes would benefit it greatly. - Louis Fowler
