Caligula, Flight of the Living Dead, and Commando

click to enlarge - Caligula: The Imperial Edition (X) - - - - Image Entertainment - - One of the most notorious films of all time has just been - given the deluxe reissue treatment, probably because of - 300 and the renewed interest in all things - ancient Greek and Roman. That's right: Caligula, - starring Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and Peter - O'Toole, is in a three-disc special edition that's bursting - with special features. Produced by Penthouse's - Bob Guccione and based on a screenplay by Gore Vidal, - this set has both the unrated, uncensored version of the - film, as filthy as it is, and the alternate, never-before- - seen pre-release version. Add to this a third disc filled - with outtakes, documentaries, rare behind-the-scenes - footage and the like, and you have a Dionysian orgy of - entertainment power at your fingertips. The Emperor - would be proud. Louis Fowler

click to enlarge Flight of the Living Dead: - Outbreak on a Plane (NR) - - - New Line Home Entertainment - - - The title, an obvious ploy, alone makes this a worthy - enough rental. Luckily, the film's actually pretty fun, too. - At 35,000 feet, a commercial airplane gets wind of a - sickness worse than food poisoning a mutated zombie - outbreak that slowly infects the whole plane. All the - stereotypical stock actors are here the cop, the - criminal with a heart of gold, the slutty flight attendants, - the older square-jawed pilot but the addition of - zombies is too much of a fun prospect to pass up. Sure, - it's stupid the dialogue atrocious and the acting is one - step above dinner theater but who cares? It's a wild - ride from start to finish. That's just the power of adding - flesh-eating zombies to a proven formula. - Louis Fowler

click to enlarge Commando: Director's Cut (R) - - - - 20th Century Fox Home - Entertainment - - When I was around 6 or 7 years old, actor Arnold - Schwarzenegger's gigantic hit Commando - appeared on cable and, boy, was I ever obsessed - with - it. I used to play the home-game version, pretending - that I was Arnold and my daughter was kidnapped by - Mexican terrorists and it was up to me, using a fully - stocked killing arsenal, to somehow get her back. It was - a very hyper-violent time to be alive. This restored - edition of the film goes into that detail in spades, adding - and extending numerous scenes including a tool-shed - rampage with Arnold slicing and dicing a team of - henchmen with saw blades and a machete. - Commando is an action film classic from a, - sadly, quickly fading era, but at least it's getting its due - now on DVD.
