The Girl Next Door, Flight of the Conchords, Hatchet

click to enlarge The Girl Next Door (R) - Anchor Bay Entertainment - "Harrowing" doesn't even begin to - describe The Girl Next Door, a film based on the - brutal Jack Ketchum novel that was based on a true - story. Like a bizarro version of Stand by Me, the - film chronicles one boy's loss of innocence in the '50s, - as he witnesses his peers' downward spiral into - animalistic evil: He watches as a mentally unbalanced - neighbor lets the neighborhood kids torture her - orphaned niece as part of a lesson about the need for - discipline. The film is a masterful work of art but also - something intensely hard to sit through. It'll fill you with - dread and a pronounced sadness about the depths to - which humanity can sink. click to enlarge Flight of the Conchords: The Complete First - Season (NR) HBO Video - Bret and Jemaine are the music group Flight - of the Conchords, "New Zealand's 4th [sic] most popular - folk parody duo." With guitars in hand, they venture out - into New York City, trying to score gigs and dough and, - well, just plain score. Inspired by an obsessed fan and - the constant threat of breakup, the duo finds itself - breaking into hilarious songs at every turn. Funnier than - Tenacious D and more linear than Mr. - Show, Flight of the Conchords is a hilarious - send-up of the fish-out-of-water genre, and the best - alternative comedy show in at least 10 years. The DVD - contains all 12 episodes, but, sadly, has no special - features. Louis Fowler

click to enlarge Hatchet: Unrated Director's Cut (NR) - Anchor Bay Entertainment / Release date: - Dec. 18 Hatchet is a fun throwback - to the '80s hack 'n slash era of horror. Here, good- - looking teens are tortured by the deformed Victor - Crowley (played by Jason Voorhees himself, Kane - Hodder). Victor doesn't want anyone intruding on his - bayou home, and when a tour group does just that, it's - terror mixed with some comedy. Newcomer director - Adam Green looks like he's going to be a horror force. - Special features include commentaries, making-of docs, - make-up and special effects docs and a great, charming - piece about Green meeting his idol, Twisted Sister's Dee - Snider. Hatchet is definitely a cut above the rest. - Louis Fowler
