Dead heat

With just a little more than a month until the Nov. 2 election, recent polls indicate that Kerry and Bush are in a statistical dead heat in Colorado. The last day to register is Oct. 4, so if you haven't signed up, head down to the Clerk and Recorder's office at 30 S. Cascade.

I - mistrust these polls. My conversations with people - suggest that the majority is unhappy with Bush and want - a change. - - Will Bush or Kerry take Colorado? It's going to - be very close, but I think many moderate Republicans - will go with Kerry as the lesser of two evils. - - What issue is being wrongly ignored? The - economy. It's the weak point for George Bush, and he's - trying to direct attention to foreign policy. That doesn't - match up with what most people care most about. - - Who is the more trustworthy candidate for vice - president? I don't trust Cheney because he's still - getting some kind of pension or something from - Halliburton. I think the Iraq war was orchestrated over - oil. - - What is the most important issue to you in this - election? We need to concentrate on this country - concerning terrorism, not on Iraq or anyplace else. - There's been a misuse of time, money and military.

So yes, I think it - could very well be even statewide. - - Which of them will pull it out in November? It's - impossible to predict at this point. - - What issue are the candidates ignoring? I want - them to address education. There are a lot of flaws in No - Child Left Behind, with its unfunded mandates, which - makes it a lot of talk and no substance. There's also a - desperate crisis with health care and health insurance - that neither side wants to tackle. - - Do you trust Cheney or Edwards most? I like - the fact that Edwards doesn't descend into the stench of - personal attack. I also find it appealing that he's a self- - made man who came up from poor roots. He may be - wealthy now, but he remembers where he came from.

You don't hear a lot about him other than his - links to Halliburton.
