Diana Krall

Sixty seconds with Diana Krall

Indy: You've called the making of your new album, Quiet Nights, your greatest studio experience. What made it special?

DK: I think I was in really good shape because I came straight off of the road after touring really quite hard through Europe all summer. So I was with [bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton], and we just went in the studio. And because I was in really good vocal shape and in good physical health and my chops were where they should be, I think that's the way to prepare for a record, even though it's daunting at first.

Indy: Quiet Nights is upbeat and romantic, and it seems to reflect your life now with your husband, Elvis Costello, and your twin sons, who were born in 2006. What's family life like?

DK: I'm laughing all the time. When my kids are around, you lighten up pretty quick ... I like having my family around me. I have [my musical] family around me, but I like having my kids. They're just little lights ... And he [Costello] is just such an amazing father and person. We both are just loving being parents.

Indy: You recently finished your first outside production project, producing none other than Barbra Streisand's new record. How did that go?

DK: She made me feel comfortable. She really trusted me and she also isn't afraid to speak her mind. So you always know where you stand. And you always know what everybody's feelings are, because they're right there. We had a great time socially as well. If we had to wait a little too long in the studio, we'd deal cards and play gin rummy, and that always just lightened things up. And we laughed a lot and told stories.

At Denver's Wells Fargo Theatre, Aug. 1.
