A review of A Taste for Gardening

The Manitou Springs Garden Club has produced a gorgeous little spiral-bound paperback on the culinary and aesthetic gifts of the garden, A Taste for Gardening. Part cookbook, part compendium of gardening advice and lore, the book is tastefully illustrated with botanical drawings and paintings by Sri and Paul Spielman and Jan Oyler, and what look to be woodblock prints by Kathy Ann Sullivan.

Organized by season, each section includes a to-do list for the garden, a place to keep your personal garden record, a lead essay on a seasonal topic and seasonal recipes featuring garden produce. "Lessons in Patience," by Kim Dorsch, "Summer Heliotropism" by Cheryl Conklin, "Autumn's Embrace" by Becky Elder, and "Romancing the Seed" by the book's editor, Sandra Knauf, are just a few of the book's insightful essays.
