Discipline vs. indulgence

Street Smarts

Health, energy and vitality are prerequisites to feeling good and getting the most out of life. But for many of us, living “well” can be a struggle.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, how healthy is your lifestyle? About a 7.

Why not a 10? Because I'm a smoker.

Do you think the Colorado Springs area is health-conscious? I think it's pretty healthy, because of the elevation and all the activities available out in nature.

What's the biggest challenge in staying healthy? Finding the healthy food. There are just a few places, and they're not open late at night.

Do you have any other thoughts about health? I believe that physical and mental health are closely related. If you eat better you'll feel better, both physically and mentally.

On a scale of one to 10, how healthy is your lifestyle? I think about a 5. I want to get there, but I'm still working on it. And I'm on vacation right now, so it's hard.

Is there something that you do daily for your health? I run every day, about a mile, even when I'm on vacation.

What's one thing you wish you'd do more often? I live in a small town in the desert, and I wish there were more healthy foods where I live, and more fresh food. We have a farmers market, but it's about 30 miles out of town.

From what you've seen on your visit here, how health-conscious does our city seem to you? I love it here, and the lifestyle seems very active. My husband and I would like to move here one day.

How much do you think about your health? My wife and I think about our health every day. How we eat, what we're doing, and when and where we shop.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how healthy is your lifestyle? About a 7. My biggest downfall is my sweet tooth, and I drink pop. But only one a day, when I'm at work, and not on weekends.

Is there anything healthy that you do every day, without fail? I work out every day, even on weekends. I mix it up, and always do something different.

How health-conscious do you think we are as a city? We've only lived here about two years, but I'd say it's pretty good. There's hiking, mountain biking and skiing, and there are a variety of good restaurants that offer vegan and gluten-free food.
