Distracted? Hardly

Distrakt just might be the hardest-working man on the Colorado Springs music scene.

The rapper, born Omar Jones, performs, promotes and makes music relentlessly. He diligently works on new beats and interactions with fans. He's also produced Distrakt TV (distrakt.com), a show that features shout-outs by De La Soul and, in one snowy scene, arguments with his on-screen alter ego, the snaggle-toothed Hater.

"I treat the promotional ideas like my beats," he says. "I like to create images and visuals to move people. I always put myself in the fan's shoes: "If I was a fan of Distrakt, what would I want to see from Distrakt?'"

Distrakt's latest CD, Distraktions (due out in March on Yard Rock), carries his brand of infectious, bassalicious hip-hop, and is enhanced with interviews and videos. The unlikely combination of cooking, C-Span and cartoons inspired the single "Fish Grease."

"I was frying up some fish in the kitchen, and I was listening to the way it was crackling and popping, and thought, "That sounds like a beat,'" he explains.

After dinner, he settled down to watch TV.

"I was watching C-Span, and seeing what's going on in the world the war and everything and realized things are hot, like fish grease."

After reaching that conclusion, he flipped the channel, landing on "Scooby-Doo," which inspired him to make the beats as animated as possible.

Already, Distrakt is working on another album, a strictly instrumental disc on which he'll play every instrument, la Prince. He's also collaborating with a group of Denver musicians to enhance his live shows.

In the meantime, though, Distrakt stays busy with self-promotion. He has no intention of leaving his native Colorado Springs for greener pastures.

"If I can't make it here, I can't do it anywhere," he says. "I want people to know I represent my town. Everyone claims New York, everyone claims Cali. I claim ColoRock."
