2013: East daytime hangouts

Colorado Springs East Side

Want to be where the people are? Look to Powers Boulevard.

Many are on their way to Cinemark Carefree Circle and IMAX (3305 Cinema Point, cinemark.com), a fully digital theater that brings all the most recently released blockbuster movies. Others are headed to First & Main Town Center (3650 New Center Point, firstandmaintowncenter.com) or the Citadel mall (750 Citadel Drive East, shopthecitadel.com), whose shopping options are detailed on p. 65.

At the Citadel, you'll find not only stores and dining, but also Imagination Celebration (imaginationcelebration.org). The nonprofit's space here will allow you and your kids to expand your creative horizons with activities ranging from dancing, drawing and writing to robotics.

You could also feed that little Tiger Woods inside you (the "good" Tiger Woods, that is) at the Citadel's GlowGolf (opryglowgolf.com), an indoor, neon glow-in-the-dark, cosmic bowling-like mini-golf adventure. And with its Laser Maze Challenge, you could re-enact your favorite Mission Impossible scene.

Another gaming zone is iT'Z Family Food & Fun (3035 New Center Point, itzusa.com). With food, arcades, bowling and even a rock-climbing wall, this place is hours of fun for, yes, the whole family.

For less neon, try the American Indoor Flea Market (2727 E. Palmer Park Blvd.), where you can search booths of vintage, retro or classic items for extreme bargains. The Colorado Springs Flea Market (5225 E. Platte Ave., csfleamarket.com), meanwhile, is an outdoor market and a great place to mingle, with a food court and live music; there's also a play area for the kiddies.

Another sunny-day destination is Security Service Field (4385 Tutt Blvd., skysox.com), home to the Sky Sox, Colorado Springs' Triple-A baseball team. But if race cars pique your interest more than relief pitchers, outside the city limits in Calhan is the El Paso County Speedway (366 10th St., elpasocountyspeedway.com). Its quarter-mile dirt oval attracts stock-car and hobby truck drivers.

Also in Calhan is Serenity Springs Wildlife Center (24615 Scott Road, serenityspringswildlife.org), where you can see Clyde, the mountain-lion mascot at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, tucked up comfortably. He's joined by more than a hundred other big cats and exotic animals at the refuge.

Finally, with this region's military pedigree, you should consider one of its newest attractions: the National Museum of World War II Aviation (765 Aviation Way, worldwariiaviation.org), a great place to delve into stories of the war zone and the home front.
