It's widely known that accessing creativity can be a good way to cope with problems in life. Thanks to the expressive faculty of, say, Pablo Picasso, there's his black-and-white masterpiece "Guernica."
This kind of thing, getting in tight with vivid memories and feelings, can be terribly difficult. But the result is more than catharsis; it can promote understanding and reach those who feel they are alone.
Some people, like Laura BenAmots, can empathize with another's pain well enough to share their experience in artwork. That's what she's accomplished with Battle Portraits: Wounded Lions Wounded Lambs, a series of paintings and drawings that documents the emotional upheaval of U.S. soldiers returning from war — the same kinds of soldiers being targeted by the hyperbaric oxygen therapy that Pam Zubeck writes about, starting here.
It makes for a heavy entry into a Fall Arts Preview, but we also promise some more lighthearted fare, including stories on budding plans for a possible amphitheater in Manitou Springs and an in-depth look at Theatre 'd Art's new season.
And as for listings, we assembled as many as we could. Still, we know there's more out there. Tell us at listings@csindy.com.
