Frank Casserino: The Fourth Tenor

You either love this guy or hate him. Seventy-one-year-old Frank Casserino is the keeper of the gate at Sam's on North Academy. Exhausting to watch, he alternately yells at people to get on in the store or sings to them in his booming operatic voice.

"If you can't keep 'em smiling, keep 'em from crying," he says. His cheerfulness almost makes you forget that you're entering a cavernous, fluorescent-lit mega-store. It might as well be a little "mom-and-pop" place in Brooklyn.

"Come on in," he bellows. "Redheads are my favorite! Are you being good to your wife? You know what you'll be singing if you're not?" He breaks into "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now."

A regular customer with a cart full of children in assorted sizes stops to chat with Casserino. The young mother says when Casserino gave up singing for Lent, she and the kids came up to the store to sing to him. The kids giggle. They obviously love him.

As he's blessing a girl with a broken arm, the woman next in line impatiently taps her Sam's card. "Can I go now?" she snaps.

"What are you standing here for? Get outta here," he yells good-naturedly.
