Why not stand next to a giant toaster and some fire jugglers in a sunny park? All that heat is bound to spark fun at the newly dubbed America the Beautiful Park, where a horde of talented musicians, artists and performers will celebrate the daylong Masterpiece in the Park this Saturday.
Instructors from Bemis School of Art will host outdoor classes on printmaking, ceramics and painting beginning at 9 a.m. The Smokebrush Foundation will provide a giant toaster installation that promises to be a gas, while side shows and carnival booths of all sorts will entertain throughout the day. Special attractions include The Colorado Fire Tribe, Brazilian Capoeira, a trampoline wall, jugglers, Glitterific Face and Body Paint, and an installation by local artist SPIKA.
Masterpiece's music and performances begin at 3 p.m. with steel drumming with Andy Seales, African rhythm drumming with Crystal Brandl, and a swarm of bands like Redraw the Farm, Pale Room, Molten Audio Experience, Archetypes, 8 Track Mafia, DJ Chris Bullock and DJ Ron Perry.
Artists of all mediums interested in Masterpiece's art competition will pay a $30 registration fee, $7 of which will benefit FutureSelf, a nonprofit working with at-risk youth to find self-expression and transformation through the creative process. Judges will choose their favorite pieces at 4 p.m. and award cash prizes of $500 and $250 for first and second place, with additional prizes for third through sixth place.
Organizer Gwin Coleman pioneered Artsplash and Artwars over the past two years, gatherings that have united Springs talents in a highly creative performance atmosphere.
"It's my goal to continue to raise money for the arts," says Coleman. "Masterpiece is kind of a summer Artsplash, with the enjoyment of the outdoors."
