Giving thanks

Giving thanks Thanksgiving is supposed to be a day of homecoming, but, seven months after the president declared the war in Iraq over, we are faced with continuing images of death, mayhem and devastation.

And I'm thankful for my family - - Has the increased violence altered your opinions about the war? No, they were already violent when they blew up our Word Trade Center. I was pro-war from the beginning. - - What do you think about Bush not attending any soldiers' funerals? I never heard anything about him not attending the funerals. - - What do you think about the media's coverage of the war and opposition to that? The media doesn't tell the whole story. They're mostly anti-war now -- in the beginning they were all talking about how we have to fight those terrorists.

What do you think about Bush not attending any soldiers' funerals? I never heard anything about him not attending the funerals.

I haven't given it much thought, but of course my friends and my family. - - Has the increased violence altered your opinions about the war? No. I'm a political science and international relations major, so my opinion of the war was pretty much set. - - What do you think about Bush not attending any soldiers' funerals? It's extremely careless of him. It shows very little support of the troops. - - What do you think about the media's coverage of the war and opposition to that? The media coverage changed -- in the beginning it was more pro-war and now it's turning almost anti-war. It's a good thing that America is starting to question the leadership. Any form of a public debate is always good for a society. -

I'm thankful for my friends and my health. - - Has the increased violence altered your opinions about the war? Not really, because I was not in favor of the war from the beginning. This only amplifies my sense that we should not have done this. - - What do you think about Bush not attending any soldiers' funerals? It's unforgivable. He needs to show more sensitivity to the families and the people who are fighting this nasty war for him. - - What do you think about the media's coverage of the war and opposition to that? I feel that actually the coverage is anti-war -- I don't think it's balanced. -

click to enlarge Carl Forman Downtown Semi-retiree What are you thankful for this year? Living in Colorado Springs, because it's so much better than the East Coast. I came here from outside Washington D.C. this year. - - Has the increased violence altered your opinions about the war? My opinion about the war has been consistent. I think it was stupid from the beginning. - - What do you think about Bush not attending any soldiers' funerals? I haven't thought about it much, because I don't think much of him. - - What do you think about the media's coverage of the war and opposition to that? It's kind of slanted. They downplayed the war and the attack. For instance the portraying of Jessica Lynch as a hero: She isn't. -

  • The year that was

This year, the United States invaded Iraq, learned the president lied about the reason for waging war on Iraq (weapons of mass destruction, anyone?), and then watched as Special Forces found Saddam Hussein hiding in a hole swarming with cockroaches and spiders. What a year!

Now it's time to visit with family, give and receive gifts, and think about what is important to us. However, the real meaning of the holidays sometimes gets lost in a flood of shopping, decoration and stress.

  • Good eatin'

We've been inundated in recent years with so many food trends -- and scares -- that it's hard to keep up anymore. There's the Slow Food movement, and pushes to avoid genetically altered food and assembly-line slaughterhouses that have been the source of mass contaminated-meat recalls.

  • Bad week for the Republicans

Last week's rulings -- outlawing vouchers and Republican efforts to gerrymander the congressional redistricting maps -- left the Grand Old Party sputtering vows to appeal. Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh erupted in anger after investigators looking for proof that he illegally obtained drugs raided his doctor's offices.
