The inaugural South Park Music Festival kicks off on Sept. 11. I'll be honest: Out of the dozens of bands on the roster for the all-day event, I've only heard of two: Summer Hartbauer and John-Alex Mason -- both Colorado Springs locals.
Maybe I've heard of Josh Todd, but I can't remember. Wait, I have heard of Oakhurst ... but I've never heard them. But hey, everyone's heard of South Park!
Many may be disappointed to learn that there isn't an actual town of South Park, nor is any part of the barren basin one hour west of Colorado Springs populated by tubby, construction paper potty-mouths or talking feces with Santa hats. But hey, it's a great gimmick and this entire festival is free: free camping, free admission, and free CDs featuring the many artists with whom you may have formerly been unfamiliar.
And some of these song crafters will have traveled from as far away as New York City, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Washington D.C. A short list of the artists in genres ranging from hip-hop to Native American flute tooting includes: Otis Gibbs, Wendy DeRossa, Kissinger, Kim McLean, Maya Azucena, Michael Thomas Quintet, Mudcrawl and many others. There's bound to be something you like, and there'll be plenty of vendors even if you don't find the band you were hoping would change your life at one of the many indoor and outdoor venues.
Hey, what part of free isn't free, cheapwad? This could be the next Burning Man and/or Sundance!
