Going his own way

Lindsey Buckingham's first solo album in 14 years, Under the Skin, starts with a line that speaks volumes about the man who wrote it: "Reading the paper, saw a review / Said I was a visionary, but nobody knew."

It's fitting; music fans are familiar with Buckingham from his Fleetwood Mac days, but his solo material remains relatively unknown among the public. Still, the core of Buckingham's sound remains unchanged since we first met him: the voice, which has graced some of the best-selling albums in the history of popular music, and the signature finger-picked guitar playing.

But the songs on Under the Skin show off an artist who is still striving to grow and experiment.

"I began making solo albums," he says, chuckling, "and it became kind of schizophrenic existence in terms of what I was looking for to nurture myself and what I was doing to be part of a band."

The tour supporting Under the Skin finds the rock legend performing in smaller, more intimate venues than most of his fans are used to. On stage, Buckingham is in full-blown guitar hero mode, showcasing his virtuosity while, at the same time, playing the songs that endeared him to a generation of music fans.

"We are doing seven or eight songs from Under the Skin," he says. But, he adds, "You'd probably have a lot of unhappy people if you didn't do "Go Your Own Way' and some of the other older songs.

"You have to include those."
