Seeing your children go hungry on a holiday that celebrates abundance.
That's the reality many area families are facing, especially in light of cutbacks to the nation's food stamp program. Turkeys, in particular, are an expensive item for families on tight budgets.
There are plenty of ways to help, but the biggest push is coming from Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado. Care and Share has received 10,000 requests for Thanksgiving turkeys from locals, and it's aiming to meet that need.
There are several ways to help. The easiest is to simply text 41010 and type "turkey" into the message. A $10 charge will appear on your next phone bill, and Care and Share will use the money to purchase a turkey for a family in need. Care and Share also allows people to give online at careandshare.org.
But if you want to pick out the turkey yourself, there's a number of options. Just make sure it's frozen solid and head to one of the following sites:
• Security Service Field: From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, the home of the Sky Sox at 4385 Tutt Blvd., will be transformed into a drive-through turkey drop-off center. Those who give a bird will be eligible for giveaways.
• Colorado Springs Panera Bread locations: From Nov. 18 to Nov. 25, Paneras will be accepting donated turkeys. Donors can get a dollar-off coupon for a turkey salad or sandwich from the restaurant.
• Wal-mart: From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 22, turkeys and financial donations will be accepted at the Wal-marts located at 5550 E. Woodmen Road, 8250 Razorback Road and 707 S. Eighth St.
If you would rather give a whole meal, Springs Rescue Mission and the Marian House Soup Kitchen (Catholic Charities of Central Colorado) are among the nonprofits offering hot meals. Food for All Nations is also offering a box with a full, uncooked holiday meal for $36 to any family, regardless of income. The boxes contain "quality food" at a discounted price. You can order for yourself, or someone in need, by Sunday, Nov. 17, at foodforallnations.com. It will be available for pickup Nov. 23.
