Hustle and flow

Long Story Short

Idris Goodwin likes keeping busy.

This past weekend, the 37-year-old flew to Philadelphia to meet with a theater company about the staging of his new play Sanctity. While there, he also took time out for a CD release show celebrating his latest rap album Rhyming While Black.

Earlier this month, within the span of one week, the Colorado College professor also hosted an album release show at the Mezzanine, spoke about "Hip Hop & Chocolate" at UCCS' Galleries of Contemporary Art, gave a Black History Month reading at CSU-Pueblo, and talked about race, rap and Walt Whitman for our cover story (here).

"I've just kind of been out hustling," says Goodwin, who also teaches a course in hip-hop aesthetics. Many of his students were on hand for the Mezzanine show, for which local hip-hop heroine Stoney Bertz did opening honors. "I told you to warm it up," he joked as she passed him the mic, "not burn it up."

"She's a helluva writer," said Goodwin the next day, "and it's that kind of wordplay that's always drawn me to hip-hop culture." He also has high praise for The ReMINDers, who've spoken to his classes, and for Big Ro's open mic poetry nights, where he's tested out new material.

Still, Goodwin is trying his best not to overdo it.

"I try not to perform too much locally," he says, "because I don't want people to get sick of me."
