IQ: Apples and rulers

Were you the one eating paste in the beanbag chair at story time? And how about the day you got caught? Sometimes the meanest teachers turn out to be the best -- they certainly are almost always the most memorable. In fact, when it comes to our school days' lasting effects, unusual approaches and innovation tend to stick in our minds.

Describe your coolest teacher. One was my high-school chemistry teacher, who gave me an F+.

What's the most important lesson he or she taught you? At the beginning of the year, we had, like, 21 students. At the end of the year, we had about six, and I was one of three that passed. If I apply myself I can do anything.

How many teachers were truly memorable? Probably about six.

What's the meanest thing a teacher ever did to you? Make me give a speech in front of the class. People would rather die than have to speak in public.

Describe your coolest teacher. Mr. Keel ... that was 11th grade. He was one of the strictest teachers you probably could ever have.

What's the most important lesson he taught you? He caught me cheating one time in his class. I had the answers written on my arm. You know, the old arm trick. I got busted.

How many teachers were truly memorable? My kindergarten, my third-grade, my fifth-grade -- she was mean, that's why I remember her.

What's the meanest thing a teacher ever did to you? The teacher looked at me, and he's like, 'Meriah, park it outside.' That was embarrassing because the whole class was ... laughing at me.

Describe your coolest teacher. Mr. Laird, my junior year of high school English teacher. He was from the South Side of Chicago and he was mean as mean can be.

What's the most important lesson he taught you? You really can't judge a book by its cover. Getting to know him after high school, I never would have guessed that he was that interesting of a person.

How many teachers were truly memorable? I actually remember all of them. I can name every one.

What's the most important lesson he taught you? He showed us that life is messy.

How many teachers were truly memorable? About four. I had a lot of forgettable teachers.
