We all have our favorites -- those dog-eared books we turn to again and again. Two common threads among this week's batch of citizen-on-the-street interviews is passionate author Ayn Rand and solitary philosopher Henry David Thoreau.
What is your all-time favorite book? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a fable about following your dream that gave me courage to decide my own path.
What have you read recently that's good? A compilation of essays by Noam Chomskey, a linguist and critic of American foreign policy. It was fascinating in the context of September 11.
If you could have an affair with any author, who would it be? Jack London. He's an adventurist and I'm an outdoors person.
Name the book you wish you'd written. Walden. It opened me up to naturalism and civil disobedience.
Who's the sexiest philosopher? Karl Marx.
Garden of the Gods
What novel do you wish you'd written? Anything by Twain. I admire his storytelling.
What's your favorite book ever? A Midsummer Night's Dream.
What's the best romance/love novel ever? The diaries of Anais Nin. I love her boldness, especially for that time period.
What novel do you wish you'd written? The one I'm going to write.
What author would you pick to have an affair with? Ayn Rand. We'd argue her views while having passionate sex.
What's the best-ever love and/or sex novel? Trouble and Her Friends, by a lesbian author. A friend gave it to me and I devoured it in one night.
Near North End
What novel do you wish you'd written? The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.
What's the best love novel? The Scarlet Letter. Having a baby out of wedlock with a minister. The struggle people go through because of the mistakes they make.
Name your favorite book. Cat's Cradle by Vonnegut. I like the idea of a religion that believes in nothing.
What book do you wish you'd written? Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I like her highly counter-cultural philosophy that man is an end to himself in a world where we depend so much on other people and religion.
Who's the sexiest philosopher? Thoreau, because of his idealism and romanticism. And who wouldn't want to live at Walden?
