IQ: Books and must-reads

After the long, nasty political season, we're gearing up for the long, cold winter that lies ahead. What better way is there to survive than by storing up a heap of books and must-reads beside our couches and beds?

What's your most memorable book this year? Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country -- a hilarious account of the out-of-the way people and politics he experienced traveling through Australia.

What's your recommended reading? Hard Sayings of the Bible. A bunch of scholars try to explain biblical contradictions.

What's your most life-changing book? What's So Amazing About Grace? Philip Yancey really socks it to Christians, telling them they've got to stop being so judgmental.

Describe the book you want to write before you die. I've already written a book called Reading Rescue 1-2-3 about teaching parents and teachers how to help children who hate reading to become better readers and learn to love reading. I still want to write a book that makes the Old Testament interesting for kids.

Which author would you most like to share a bottle of wine and an evening of conversation? O. Henry. He began writing in jail when he was imprisoned for embezzlement, he made a ton of money and then died penniless.

What's your best read this year? White Oleander. I love the style. You can read the same paragraph over and over.

What's your winter must-read? Sartre's The Age of Reason. I didn't get through it the first time.

What's your most memorable political book? Nickel and Dimed. It's about how working people are ripped off, yet are made to believe they're not taken advantage of.

Which book most changed your life? I was only 18 at the time and extremely impressionable, but I was floored by Richard Bach's Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah.

Pick an author to share a six-pack and a night's conversation with. Paula Gunn Allen. She's a feminist with strong beliefs, but she's not pushy or doctrinaire -- my favorite combination.

What's your most memorable read so far this year? For both political and personal reasons, I closely follow the interworkings of business and politics. I thoroughly enjoyed Blinded by the Right by David Brock. It's a very well written page-turner about the inner workings of the right wing.

What's a must-read this winter? I have about five books on the 2000 election scandal I can't wait to read.

Name your all-time favorite political book. Eisenhower Declassified was frighteningly excellent. It's an account of 1950s politics and Eisenhower learning how much he'd been tricked by his advisers and the depth of anger behind his speech at the end of his second term about the danger of the military-industrial complex.
