IQ: Conflict considerations

Last Friday, the top U.S. military commander in Iraq announced that the war was not over. Our president, however, has been declaring victory for a month now. Are we winning in Iraq? Are we safer from the threat of terrorism now than we were before the invasion? We asked a few citizens on the street what they thought.

How do you feel about President Bush's assertions that the military victory in Iraq will decrease terrorism? I agree with that.

Do you think that people who did not support the war are un-American? No, I think part of being an American is having the ability to make your own determinations, so I think people are free to have that opinion.

On what fronts should we be fighting the war on terrorism and with what weapons? We should be fighting terrorism in any way that we can, and I think we should employ what means are reasonable and possible.

Who was the greatest war hero of all time? Greatest champion for peace? I think was the far as the greatest champion of peace, it would be Gandhi. As far as the greatest war hero, it would have to be Sun Tzu.

Did we win the war in Iraq by your definition? Yes.

How do you feel about President Bush's assertions that the military victory in Iraq will decrease terrorism? Let's just say that I'm not convinced.

Do you think that people who did not support the war are un-American? No. It's an American's right to agree or disagree and to express their views. Part of a democracy is that people are entitled to their own opinions.

On what fronts should we be fighting the war on terrorism and with what weapons? Probably on all the fronts that we're fighting now and with all the weapons we're using and anything else that comes to mind.

Who was the greatest war hero of all time? Greatest champion for peace? The greatest warrior was Ghengis Khan. Champion of peace? There have been tons of them. How about Albert Schweitzer?

Did we win the war in Iraq by your definition? Not yet. We have to we win the peace.

How do you feel about President Bush's assertions that the military victory in Iraq will decrease terrorism? I don't think that it will at all. He didn't catch Saddam, he didn't find any weapons, and there are plenty of other countries that are more dangerous than Saddam ever was.

Do you think that people who did not support the war are un-American? No, I don't. I support our troops but I didn't support the war either. I don't think that we should be policing the world.

On what fronts should we be fighting the war on terrorism and with what weapons? I think we should be holding more peace talks and going to other countries to try and talk them out of things and show them that we aren't big bullies.

Who was the greatest war hero of all time? Greatest champion for peace? I don't know about that one. I hate war and don't pay attention to it. As for the champion of peace, I think Nelson Mandela is a good candidate for that.

Did we win the war in Iraq by your definition? No, we didn't. I think all we did was make things worse there.
