IQ: Men in black

As Colorado Springs grows into a big city, so too must our police force. In the past couple of weeks for example, cops announced their new toys for subduing people -- stun guns will take anyone down in a flash. But many who watched young children get tear-gassed by cops in all-black riot gear during last Saturday's peaceful protest at Palmer Park think we've got a ways to go (see Letters to the editor, page 5). -- Chessie Thacher

Do you think Colorado Springs cops are trained to effectively deal with large crowds? What I saw on the news Saturday was awful -- crude, callous and rude.

Do you feel safe or scared when a cop is around? Safe. Policemen are honest, patient and caring.

What do you think about Colorado Springs cops' new tool -- stun guns -- which they are using to immobilize people? They're too hard on a person's body. The police have lots of weapons. Why do they need any more?

Do you trust Colorado Springs cops to investigate their own? There should definitely be a third party like a lawyer.

Do you think Colorado Springs cops are trained well in dealing with large crowds? Probably not. Most policemen seem to miss that part of the training process.

Do you feel safe or scared when a cop is around? I feel intimidated. They always think that I look suspicious. I am constantly stopped and checked for my ID.

Do you trust Colorado Springs cops to investigate their own? They should bring in outside investigators because the cops probably have some bias.

Do you feel safe or scared when a cop is around? I check my speedometer.

What do you think about stun guns? If they're used under justified circumstances, they sound like another tool police can use to protect themselves.

Do you trust Colorado Springs cops to investigate their own? The police try but it's also up to the citizens of the community to be participants in whatever their elected officials or policemen are doing.

Do you think Colorado Springs cops are trained to effectively deal with large crowds? They are not ready to deal with the population here in the Springs. Tear gas was certainly unnecessary for Saturday's protest.

Do you feel safe or scared when a cop is around? I respect the majority of police officers -- every day they are out there risking their lives.

What do you think about stun guns? They seem unnecessary on the streets. Maybe they can be used in the jails.

Do you trust Colorado Springs cops to investigate their own? The state [of Colorado] should pick that one up.
