IQ: Trade globally or locally?

Protests at the World Trade Organization meeting last week focused attention on Seattle, but what did we learn about the protesters' gripes or about what went on at the meetings once they got started? As we move toward a world economy, are we losing touch with our local businesses?

Where do you think most fresh-cut flowers come from? Probably from either California or Mexico.

What was the last thing you bought that you know came from Colorado? I guess it would be some food at the store, but just what it was, I don't know.

What about from the United States? Books, I buy a lot of books. I give books for Christmas.

What did you learn about world trade from the protests in Seattle last week? It seems like the protesters didn't really understand the problem, at least the ones causing all the trouble. I think world trade does help the world altogether.

Where do you think most fresh-cut flowers come from? I don't know really, maybe theres a farmer's market in Denver.

What was the last thing you bought that you know came from Colorado? Probably food and locally-grown vegetables from a grocery store.

What about from the United States? Probably groceries in Wal-Mart, because I think everything has to be U.S. made there.

What did you learn about world trade from the protests in Seattle last week? From the protests, not really much. World trade, I think, is a huge issue, but I didn't learn too much from the protesters. I didn't hear interaction among them; I got a reporter's view of what they were doing.

Where do you think most fresh-cut flowers come from? I would assume from the nurseries; I think they grow them.

What was the last thing you bought that you know came from Colorado? Heck, I bought a ... from Colorado ... I don't know. Nothing, that I know of.

What about from the United States? I don't know. Fashion attire, I guess (pointing at his Bronco sweatshirt).

What did you learn about world trade from the protests in Seattle last week? Supposedly, it's anti-environment. I think that if we move more toward world trade, we won't be getting much of what we need from in the States; pretty much everything will be imported. I think it's heading that way.
