IQ: What's in the news?

Does the news media have the right to choose what it reports to the public? Of course it does. Dan Rather and company choose not to report on the club scene in Manhattan, or on a boy who has cancer living in a small town in Texas. When something has a direct effect on a city or country or on world affairs, however, is it the media's responsibility to report it? What if they don't?
