IQ: You are what you eat

The recent shutdown of the Swift and Co. beef plant in Greeley due to the discovery of feces-contaminated meat is the latest in the gross news about the food we consume. Over the past several years, the American public has been treated to an increase in genetically modified vegetables and hormone-treated milk. Not everyone thinks that's a good thing.

What should be done about the repeated violations at meatpacking plants? There should be more strident inspections and regulations to ensure that our food is as safe as it can be.

Who should be responsible for making sure our food is safe? I would like to think that the private producers of our food supply would take it upon themselves to ensure the utmost safety.

Do you mind eating genetically modified foods? Yes, because I don't know if there's been a case made [that] the genetically modified food products will have no impact on human health.

What about milk from hormone-treated cows? I don't drink milk. I drink soy milk. If I'm not mistaken, we are one of the few, and maybe the only animal that continues to drink milk after it's weaned.

Who should be responsible for making sure our food is safe? Ultimately, we have to be, as consumers.

How well is the government ensuring food safety? I think they're doing a fairly good job. We've certainly come a long way in the past 100 years.

Do you mind eating genetically modified foods? I would say no. There's no difference between [eating genetically modified foods] and buying a tulip that has been hybridized to be heartier and more colorful.

What's your most decadent junk food? At Michelle's, there's these little clusters of, like, cashews, and they have caramel in them, and they're chocolate-covered. Oh, my God! You eat one, and you feel horrible and ecstatic at the same time.

What should be done about repeated violations at meatpacking plants? Decentralize meatpacking; take it back to neighborhood meatpackers. In a centralized processing plant ... they hire the cheapest help they can get. People from other countries have immunity to bacterial and viruses that we don't have.

Who should be responsible for making sure our food is safe? The people that sell it.

Do you mind eating genetically modified foods? I don't. I'm a strict vegan. I don't eat anything that has a face on it.

What about milk from hormone-treated cows? I don't drink milk either. Milk is bad, bad, bad. They did a study over in four countries in Europe ... milk drinkers and meat eaters both, they had the highest levels of ... heart disease, cancer, all the other stuff.
