Homeschooling escalated significantly during the "culture wars" of the 1990s. It's an educational approach with built-in advantages and disadvantages, and reliable results have been hard to find.

A disadvantage? There's far less socialization with other kids, and it shelters the kid from knowledge of world situations.
Why do you think parents opt to homeschool? The biggest reason in this town is religion. Also, lack of faith in the public school system, and wanting the kid to learn only what the parents believe.
Would you homeschool your child? I'm not versed enough in all fields to do it, and both my kids went through the Colorado Springs school system as A students, so I see no need for it.
Is the typical motivation for homeschooling more educational, political or religious? Around here, I think it's mostly political and religious.

Director, teen court Why do parents opt to homeschool? Concern with the public school system. Belief they can educate their child better. There's also religious reasons, and sometimes safety issues.
Cite an advantage to homeschooling. The homeschooled children I've worked with tend to be mature and respectful. They're generally capable, reliable and independent.
Name a disadvantage. Homeschooled kids tend to be a bit sheltered and nave, with low coping skills in real-world situations.
Would you homeschool your child? No. As a former teacher, I saw homeschooled kids unable to cope in regular classrooms because they're so used to one- on-one attention. Communication and teamwork skills are essential in today's society, and homeschooled kids don't have them as much.

Would you homeschool your child? I see no reason why. I had some phenomenal public school teachers, and some of my best experiences in life occurred in classrooms.
