Last year, the El Paso County Department of Health and Environment saw 2,937 cases of sexually transmitted diseases, including syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia as well as 16 cases of HIV from June 2004 to June 2005.
Some colleges are more stringent about where they give out condoms than others. Here's the lowdown on where to find them, from student health offices to dormitories, at four area residence colleges. No matter where you are, make sure to wear one.
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Free condoms are available through the Student Health Center. According to UCCS family nurse practitioner Misty Horn, condoms used to be available through resident advisors in the dormitories, but no longer.
"The RAs weren't getting a good night's sleep because kids were banging on their doors [asking for condoms]," Horn says.
Sean Flaherty, director of residence life and housing, adds that some RAs might feel uncomfortable or have moral objections to handing out condoms to their residents. Students instead can get free condoms at the health center and via various safe sex awareness programs.
University officials, meanwhile, try to discourage sex in the dorm rooms altogether, with a policy forbidding overnight visitors of the opposite sex.
According to the student handbook, the dorm "is not an appropriate place for having sex. Such behavior can cause embarrassment or be offensive to room/suite mates and other residents and can infringe on the right of others to privacy."
However, the housing staff is not trained to conduct room inspections.
"We're not coming in your room at 3 in the morning to count feet," Flaherty says.
Colorado College Condoms are available 24 hours a day at Boettcher Health Center and are three for a dollar. Additionally, several student groups, including the Victim Assistance Team and Help Ignorance Vanish, an HIV education group, purchase condoms in bulk and dispense them throughout campus. The condoms are made available in residence halls and the campus union building, the Worner Center. According to women's health nurse practitioner Kym Sova, condoms are difficult to keep stocked, and student groups "do a better job of getting them to the spots that need them."
Colorado State University-Pueblo Condoms are available at the counter of the student health center for students to pick up as they please. They're sporadically available in residence halls during special programs such as the "Safe Sex Olympics," which aims to educate students about safe sex with a two-hour informational session and panel. CSU-Pueblo has no official regulations against sex in dorm rooms, but overnight guests must be signed in and OK'd by roommates.
United States Air Force Academy Condoms are available at base exchanges or the Public Health Office where, upon request, cadets are issued three packets of three condoms each and given instructions on how to properly put them on. Sex is prohibited in the dormitories and is punishable to varying degrees, depending on the situation and individuals involved.
