Joe Ely

When: Sun., March 3 2013

Joe Ely may not have been the biggest name joining Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band during their performance at last year's SXSW festival, but it's easy to see why the Texas singer-songwriter was among the most respected. He toured with the Clash and sang backup vocals on "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" He collaborates with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock as the Flatlanders, whom American Songwriter recently hailed as the "founding fathers of Americana." And his 2011 release, Satisfied at Last, snuck onto Billboard's Heatseekers and Country charts (at Nos. 18 and 46, respectively), a rare accomplishment for a self-released album. Ely plays the Soiled Dove Underground (7401 E. First Ave., Denver, soileddove.com) at 7 this evening for $20 to $25. — Bill Forman
