John Gorka

When: Fri., Jan. 4 2013

Like Suzanne Vega, Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin, John Gorka made his first recordings for Fast Folk, a music cooperative that grew out of the Greenwich Village folk revival of the 1980s. It was the start of a distinguished career that's included high-profile tours and Rolling Stone declaring him "the preeminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement." After dabbling with more polished production values, Gorka has returned to a more stripped-down sound well-suited to a singer-songwriter whose musical and lyrical talents ("If these walls could talk / They would say shut up") are always worth hearing. Catch him at Stargazers Theatre and Event Center (10 S. Parkside Drive, stargazerstheatre.com) at 8 tonight for $20/adv, $25/door. — Bill Forman
