Just ducky

Don't write off Suburban Legends, a ska/punk band from Orange County, Calif., solely based on its neighborhood. These guys are completely down to Earth.

Vince Walker (vocals), Brian Klemm (guitar), Brian Robertson (trombone), Derek Lee Rock (drums), Mike Hachey (bass) and Luis Beza (trumpet) got their big start playing in Disneyland Resort's Downtown Disney district. After an audition earned Suburban Legends a good response, Disney decided to try something new it put the band on the sidewalk. It was a grueling summer, playing seven nights a week, five sets a night, but the experience honed their skills.

"We really learned how to connect with the audience," Walker says on the phone from California. "There are no barriers on a sidewalk stage."

The guys met in high school and played their first gig at a talent show in Huntington Beach back in 1998. Since then, they've endured members leaving, then returning, then leaving again, as well as a van fire.

Plus, there's been a role reversal. Walker, formerly on trumpet, now occupies center stage as the vocalist.

"When it was me and the other horns, we'd do things like synchronized dance moves," Walker says. "We were in our own little world. Now it's definitely different, but I still go out there, have fun and connect with the audience."

Suburban Legends' latest CD, Dance Like Nobody's Watching, released last year, was Walker's first recording effort on vocals. Currently, the guys are laying down tracks for a new album, set for release in late July. They kick off their Summer Crush Tour on July 6 at Disneyland's Tomorrowland Terrace.
