Dear Ms. Zukin:

You may be aware of a burgeoning backlash against what critics have dubbed The Wedding Industrial Complex.

The charge is that a host of institutions, your publication among them, have dictated a set of requirements as to what constitutes a proper wedding. Naturally, a proper wedding involves spending thousands on wedding planners, photographers, caterers, alcohol, chauffeurs and other essentials.

If you don't do it right, the sentiment implies, then not only are you cheating yourself out of the birthright that is your perfect day, but you're also denying friends and family their Kodak moments as well.

By my estimation, the best way to counter this subversive ideology is to run a series of articles about the perils of eloping. What I'm proposing is half a dozen 8,000- to 10,000-word profiles of young, seemingly happy couples who impulsively eloped and are now struggling to survive without the necessary culinary appliances one gleans through even the most modest Pottery Barn registry.

Through a plaintive tone, I will highlight the sorrow and regret these young, facially unblemished people endure knowing they'll never have their golden day.

My work has previously appeared in numerous publications including Butcher's World, The Postal Patron and Public Sanitation Weekly.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Cleaver
