The Thirsty Parrot, 32 S. Tejon St., 884-1094 Thursday, June 21, 9 p.m. No cover.

Chris Combs, who packs Leer43's tight drumming, would gladly trade this story for a want-ad: "Hard-working band seeks management."

The group, he explains, is at that precarious point where only an outsider, someone with more time on his or her hands, can prod it toward explosion.

A manager would do well to take on Leer43. The band a little bit Death Cab for Cutie, with some Yeah Yeah Yeahs-style guitar work thrown in has existed, in some incarnation, for 10 years.

Lead singer Brandon Metz formed the group when he was just 13 years old. And he chose the name Leer43 for a reason. No one seemed to understand exactly what it was that he was trying to do with his music; he was met with leers, or sideways smirks, when he first started playing. As for 43, Metz says he randomly associates that number with Tuesday, a day of the week that's both necessary and wearisome.

But those anomalous feelings from the '90s are gone. Today, Leer43 revels in the company of other thoughtful rockers in Colorado Springs, like mainstay Sedalia. The band, which also consists of bass player Michael Cox and guitarist Dan Means, delivers well-orchestrated rock with elegant drumming and emotive guitar.

The only thing missing: that manager, apparently.
