Less may be more

In the wake of an 18-month nomination campaign, and with nominees already decided, a number of voters seem all but indifferent to the national political conventions. Others, however, still see plenty to talk about.

Did the Democratic National Convention influence your view of Barack Obama? I was already pretty impressed with him. I didn't pay much attention to the convention.

What's your view of Sarah Palin, John McCain's VP pick? It's McCain going after women who would have voted for Hillary. I don't think she's qualified. He made a bad choice.

What does Obama need to do to win? If I had the answer to that, I'd be working for his campaign.

What does McCain need to do? He needs to lose.

What's your view of Joe Biden, Obama's VP pick? I'm impressed by what I've seen. He seems competent.

How about Sarah Palin? Like just about everyone, I know little about her. It's a choice that strikes me as desperate.

Does Palin on the ticket make you more likely to vote for McCain? There's not the slightest chance I'd vote for McCain.

Are the conventions fueling enthusiasm? Not at all. They're both partisan and tiresome.

Assess the election at this juncture. I thought it would be a shoo-in for Obama, but recent polls suggest differently. I haven't seen a single yard sign for McCain. Given the past eight years, it seems impossible anyone would vote Republican this time.

What does Obama need to do to win? I thought all he'd need is a heartbeat, but apparently not.

What's your view of Palin? I was surprised. I know little about her, but I relate to her. She seems kind of like me a mom and she has a lot of the same beliefs as me.

Why did McCain pick her? The fact that she's a woman appeals to a lot of people, and she's new and different they can't dismiss her as four more years of Bush and typical Republicanism. Her lack of experience is surprising, though.

What's your read of Biden? I'm impressed with his story. He seems to be a man of integrity and character.

What must McCain do to win? Convince voters he's not more of George Bush.

Assess the election at this point. I'm not thrilled by either candidate or party. It's a little dismal this time.

  • Some might ignore conventions, but many are paying attention to the election.
